About this coffee roast
In 18th century Philadelphia, coffee emerged as a pivotal social and economic force, shaping the city's culture and commerce. Fueled by the established and growing importation of chocolate, coffeehouses rapidly proliferated across the city, becoming vibrant hubs for intellectual exchange, political discourse, and business dealings. Established in 1754, the London Coffee House, located at the corner of 2nd & Market street, stands as an iconic institution in American colonial history. Serving as a hub for intellectual discourse and political debate during the pre-revolutionary period, notable figures frequented the coffeehouse such as John Adams and famous Philadelphian Benjamin Franklin who offered his valuable opinion on the drink:
“Among the numerous luxuries of the table…coffee may be considered as one of the most valuable. It excites cheerfulness without intoxication; and the pleasing flow of spirits which it occasions…is never followed by sadness, languor or debility.”
