About this coffee roast
Our Mount Vernon blend is named after George Washington's palatial Virginia home and estate. America’s first President was an avid drinker of coffee and according to his personal records and ledgers, also imported large quantities of beans.
In one order alone in 1770, he received a shipment of 200 pounds. “I will thank you also for sending me, if an oppertunity should offer soon by Water, one hundred weight, or even a Barrel of good Coffee,” he wrote in 1784 to a Philadelphia merchant who helped him import goods.
Washington didn’t settle for just any variety, either. In November 1799, mere weeks before his death, he ordered 150 pounds of beans from the Red Sea Port of Mocha, which at the time was widely considered to be the best.
